Chonor House, a branch of Norbulingka, is one of the best places to stay in Mcleod Ganj, near Dharamsala is conveniently located near the Thekchen Chöling Temple adjacent to HH the Dalai Lama’s residence, right in the centre of town. 

Each of our eleven well-appointed rooms is beautifully decorated according to a unique Tibetan theme. Set amidst tall cedars, Chonor House is peacefully removed from the hustle and bustle of the town.

Chonor House was designed and built by British architect David Porter in a style intended to blend with the natural environment of the hills overlooking the Kangra valley.

Excavation of the site, which began November 1988, was a revelation. We uncovered the foundations of a large house and objects which had belonged to its occupants.

The late Mr Nowrojee, one of Mcleod Ganj’s oldest residents, told us that a courthouse had stood on the Chonor House site. The building and interior decoration, which involved the work of three different groups of Tibetan painters, and because we wanted all the work to be of the highest quality and integrity we were prepared to be patient in achieving it.
