Among the attractions is a golden throne and crown belonging to the former royal family. The Gangaramaya Temple, Beira Lake, crowded Pettah and Galle Face Green (great views and street food!) are some other places you might want to spend time at. A tuk-tuk is the best way to get around.

Cooler climes with greet you at Kandy, 115km away from Colombo. The charming boutique hotels nicely capture the town’s majestic views, and the street markets and restaurants add a bit of character. Not to be missed close the city are the Temple of the Tooth, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Royal Botanical Gardens and the tea estates.

Anuradhapura ruled Sri Lanka for over 1,000 years. Today, this sprawling complex of ruins has some evocative sights, such as Abhayagiri Dagoba and Jetavanarama Dagoba, that was once the third largest monument in the world.
You’ll find more imposing monuments at Sigiriya, where palace ruins rest atop an incredible two hundred meter tall rock face. A visit to the museum is also worth it, for it showcases the excavation process well.
